2003 Sustainable Agriculture Transition Program
Tobacco farming has shaped the landscape and culture of western North
Carolina for over a century. Due to policy changes and lowered tobacco
quotas, farmers are looking to new crops and techniques to continue to
profitably farm. Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture
Project, through a grant from the North
Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, is looking for innovative
farm projects that can help individual farmers make the successful transition
to a diversified and profitable farming operation and can be used as
models for other farming operations.
Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project
will make awards of $5,000 to ten farm operations in each of the next
two years (2003-2004) for a total of twenty grants and a total project
grant of $100,000. These grants are exclusively for farmers that are
currently engaged in the production of tobacco. The grants will be
awarded to farmer projects that show innovation and can serve as models
for other farmers. These grants can not be used to pay off existing
debt. These grants can not be used for conventional tobacco production.
Farm operations must be in one or more of the following counties only:
Buncombe, Haywood, Madison, and/or Yancey.
Farmers who are awarded grants can expect marketing support and mentoring
through the network established over the last five years through the
ASAP Transition
Program.
