Event description:

CAFE (Clinch Appalachian Farmers Enterprise) would like to invite farmers to a workshop about sustainable options for providing or supplementing heat in hoop house/greenhouses on Saturday January 10, 2009 from 9:00am-2:30pm. More information follows.

This is a one day workshop for exploring several “green”, innovative options, used to heat season extension structures.

Location: St Henry’s Catholic Church

114 Hwy 70N,  Rogersville, TN 37857

Date: January 10, 2009

Time: 9 am to 2:30 pm. 

Cost: free

Lunch will be provided. Pre-registration required


A small stipend will be provided to growers, for travel  costs, if  pre-registered by January 1, 2009.

There will be a tour of Martin’s Greenhouses (in Rogersville) after lunch.   We will have a chance to see some innovative heating methods in action.


Moderator: Dr. Annette Wszelaki, UT Extension’s Vegetable Ext. Specialist


Presenter: Anthony Flaccavento, Director of Appalachian Sustainable Development in Abingdon, VA, will teach us about using low tunnels within high tunnels.


Presenter: Tamara McNaughton, M.A.,  Ex. Director of Appalachian Native Plants Inc. in Mt. City, TN, will give an overview of the subterranean heating and cooling system used in their greenhouse.


Presenter: Yonatan Strauch, M.A., Affordable Bioshelters Project Director, Appalachian State University will educate us on heat storage strategies and systems for high tunnels, and affordable, effective super insulated greenhouses.
