Local and In Season: Tomatoes
ASAP is promoting seasonal, local produce during the peak seasons of
August and September with print ads and more. Right now, the spotlight is on tomatoes.
Special Night City Market
As evening
falls on Thursday, August 28, Asheville City Market vendors will spread their
wares for a special farmers market as a part of the Tastes of Summer benefit
event. Attendees are invited to browse the market for the region's best
farm-grown and handmade local foods and gifts and to enjoy catering by Mark
Rosenstein of The Market Place restaurant, drinks, and live music all at the
same time.
The event
is a benefit for ASAP put on by the Asheville Affiliates. The market is open to
the public from 6:00-8:00p.m. Admission to the accompanying Affiliates party, with food
from The Market Place, beer, and wine, is $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
The party runs from 6:30-9:00p.m. It will be held in
the usual City Market location at the Public Works Building, 161 S. Charlotte St.,
on the edge of downtown Asheville.
The
Asheville Affiliates is a group of young professionals dedicated to supporting
fundraising events for Asheville-area nonprofit organizations.
Get Local Restaurant Event
Get Local is a tasty celebration of food from local farms,
brought from farm to table by talented chefs.
Each month
this summer and fall, we will be celebrating the changing seasons by
focusing as a community on one great locally grown ingredient. Our
focus for August is tomatoes. Local farmers are growing a truly
impressive variety.
Mobile Processing Unit
A Mobile Processing Unit
(MPU)--for on-farm processing of poultry and rabbit by the producer--is
nearly complete. The MPU is designed for on-farm processing by the
producer for personal use or sale under the North Carolina Department
of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDACS) provision for inspection
exempt processing.
Individuals may slaughter up to 1,000 chickens or rabbits of their
own raising for retail or wholesale sale without benefit of inspection.
Please refer to NCDACS regulations for your particular situation.
Foothills Family Farms offers the MPU to producers within a 60 mile
radius of Old Fort for $40/ daily (outside 60 miles are charged a
reasonable mileage fee). The renter is responsible for pick-up and drop
off of the unit in Old Fort. A capable vehicle with a 2 5/16" ball is
required for towing. Currently, you must be able to attend a short
training session on set-up, take-down, and cleaning to be eligible to
rent the unit. Soon, a training video will be available that will
satisfy this requirement. See below for more details.
Reservations for processing dates through December 31st, 2008 are being taken.
To inquire about the MPU or make a reservation, please
