Our Food Our Future: Essential Facts About Genetic Engineering

A Free Public Forum sponsored by Carolina Partners for Pure Food

A free Public Forum will be held at Owen Conference Center- UNC Asheville Campus, Asheville, North Carolina, Saturday April 27, 1:30-5:00 PM. The keynote speakers will be Steve Wilson and Jane Akers. Steve and Jane are former Fox News Reporters who lost their jobs when they tried to tell the truth about rBGH (recumbent bovine growth hormone) and its links to cancer in lab tests. They were told to censor their story and were later fired due to corporate pressure placed on the network. They later went to court and won a civil suit against Fox News.

Come hear their story: the truth behind rBGH, and why it is still prevalent in the US milk supply. Other speakers will include Missy Crowe and Lisa Monotelongo of the Cherokee Tribe, Michael Sligh of Rural Advancement Foundation International, and Patryk Battle, local organic farmer. They will address other health concerns and the issues that farmers face- why genetically engineered crops are unnecessary, cross contamination from genetically engineered crops, the potential for "super pests and weeds" to develop, lawsuits from corporations, inability to sell contaminated crops, and much more.

Also learn about the challenges that consumers face when given no information about products containing genetically modified organisms (GMO's) and no ability to choose products free of such ingredients. Other countries have addressed and solved these problems of sourcing, labeling, testing and guaranteeing products free of GMO's, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet those guarantees. The global food supply is threatened with an increase of contamination and new crops are scheduled for release in coming years, including rice and other staple grains. Citizens in the US overwhelmingly support labeling laws, and polls show that most Americans do not want to eat genetically engineered foods. Freedom of choice and the public health is at stake. Learn more at the public forum!

There will be tabling by other supporting groups who are concerned about the health and environmental aspects of genetic engineering as well as a question and answer period following each speaker. Join the movement to protect pure food and take action to insure that we still have a choice in the foods we eat and the lives we live. Carolina Partners for Pure Food is a nonprofit grassroots organization dedicated to protection of our food supply and the promotion of sustainable agriculture. A strategy session for activists and networking is planned for Sunday April 28, but space is limited. Please call or email to register.
