Appalachian Grown: Towards a Regional Community-Based Food System Evaluation of the Local Food Guide and Local Food Campaign of the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Projectview report (opens a new browser window; requires free Adobe PDF reader) The Local Food Campaign is the main strategic component used by the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) to promote local consumption of local farm products in Western North Carolina (WNC). This report reviews the major activities of ASAP’s Local Food Campaign, including public education and promotional work; farmer training and support; focused farm-to-school programming; the Appalachian Grown TM labeling program; and publishing and distributing the Local Food Guide, a guide to food and farms in the region. Where possible, successes of the Campaign are highlighted, as are changes in each category of Campaign activity since the Campaign began in 2000. Special attention is given to reviewing the effectiveness of the Local Food Guide, which is the main method ASAP has used to promote local food and farms in the region.
