Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project
Field Day #2: Organic Apple Production

Anthony Owens' Farm
Henderson County

Printable Agenda and directions
On September 5th, 2002, 1-4 pm, the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project will sponsor an Organic Apple Production Field Day. This year marks Anthony's first application of organic methods of production to part of his apple orchard and, by working with Marvin Owings (Henderson County Extension) and several researchers from NCSU, Anthony and his family have produced a very good apple crop.

Much of Henderson County has had a good production season for apples (though dry weather is still a potential problem for fruit sizing) and the Owens family has been very diligent in their maintenance of this crop. This Field Day is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in apple production to hear a discussion of all of the variables affecting successful organic production: costs, approved spray materials, equipment, ground-cover management, traps, scouting and resources. Anthony has kept excellent records of this project and will be happy to share his experiences with you. Researchers and Extension personnel should be available to answer other questions.

Directions: Take I-26 towards Hendersonville. Take Exit 18-A onto US 64 East towards Edneyville. Go approximately five miles and take a right onto Laycock Road (look for a sign that says "Organic"). Follow Laycock Road to its end at a stop sign. Take a left onto Ridge Road. Ridge Road will become a dirt road and become Lamb Mountain Road. Approximately one mile after the road becomes dirt take a sharp right onto Chickasaw Trail. Take the first road on your left to Anthony Owens' orchard.
